Our Finances

Net Worth Update – Nov 2020

These posts are getting embarrassing. I should be excited this month because our net worth actually increased a good amount but we still have a huge chunk of un-invested cash. Truthfully I’m actually pretty nervous to invest having dual citizenship, and want to make sure we’re doing everything legally and in a tax advantaged way so one of my goals this month is to find a tax accountant/advisor who can walk us through what we’re allowed to do and how we should be setting up our finances. I hope to learn as much as I can this month so that we can start investing properly in 2021.

November Net Worth

What Happened This Month?

We got paid! November was my first full month of employment and my husband was just a few days shy of a full month of work. I also got paid for the final bit of contract work that I did at the beginning of October. So overall it was a pretty cash-flow positive month.

Our spending was around $4,800. We were actually hoping to be around $4,000 in November, but like every single month, something always comes up.

Notable expenses included:

WFH Expenses ~$339 – As we’re both now working from home full-time, we had to buy another desk and chair. I ended up getting a pretty fancy chair because my back has been KILLING me since I started working again. I basically could barely walk for a couple of weeks. Working is great. It’s been great.

Christmas ~$523 – I did some Xmas shopping in November but also bought my first fresh Christmas tree – holy crap they’re expensive. I always grew up with a live tree but completely understand now why people get fake ones. That said, it smells wonderful and it makes me really happy – even though we have only 2 ornaments on it (and lights). I’m too cheap to spend money on ornaments and will steal some from my mom for next year.

Groceries ~$889 – yeah. Remember back in September when I spent $90 on tea and I was all like oh that should last us 5 months… it didn’t. So we spent another $80 on tea but we also did a couple big grocery shops at the end of the month. Getting closer to Christmas I’m really hoping to avoid grocery stores and stores in general and just any and all humans so that (fingers crossed) we can safely join my parents over Christmas.

My December goal is to learn how to invest my new Questrade RRSP account in index funds and to stay inside and away from covid so that I can spend Christmas with my family. The latter is really all I can think about this month.
